Abstract

In September 2018, the level of expenditure inequality in the Special Region (D.I.) of Yogyakarta showed a decrease compared to the previous semester. This condition is reflected in the September 2018 Gini Ratio figure which was recorded at 0.422 or a decrease of 0.019 points compared to March 2018 of 0.441.
  • The Gini Ratio in urban and rural areas recorded a decrease in September 2018 when compared to March 2018. The Gini Ratio in urban areas was 0.421 or decreased by 0.021 points in the last semester. Meanwhile, the Gini Ratio in rural areas amounted to 0.326 or decreased by 0.024 points compared to March 2018.
  • Based on World Bank criteria, the level of inequality in D.I. Yogyakarta is in the moderate inequality category. This is reflected in the percentage of expenditure of the bottom 40 percent of the population which reached 15.65 percent.
  • In rural areas, the bottom 40 percent of the population has an expenditure proportion of 20.66 percent of the total expenditure of the population. Meanwhile, in urban areas, the bottom 40 percent of the population has an expenditure of 14.80 percent of the total expenditure of the population.
  • Using both the Gini Ratio and the World Bank Measure, it appears that the level of inequality in rural areas is still better than in urban areas.
